As we all know the holy month of Ramadan is fast approaching. Insh'Allah, this year it will start during the third week in August. With this month of generosity, we are given many opportunities to bring the community together and perform good deeds for the sake of Allah; one easy way to do that is to provide food for those who fast.

The Prophet (SAWS) was asked which was the best type of charity. He (SAWS) replied, "The charity of Ramadan (or given during Ramadan)." [Tirmidhi]

The Prophet (SAWS) said: "Whoever gives someone something to break the fast with, he would have The same blessings as the fasting person and this would not reduce the blessings of the fasting person in any way. " [Ahmad and Tirmidhi]

Nueces Mosque provides iftaars Monday through Friday every Ramadan and every night during the last ten nights to the UT student and downtown Austin community, most of whom live away from their families. Last year, the iftaars were a success with many brothers and sisters attending each night. This year, we are anticipating an even greater turnout, insh'Allah.

To accommodate the increasing cost of food and attendance, each iftaar will cost approximately $600.00 per day, which includes food and drinks for 85-100 people.

You have the option to cover an entire iftaar by cooking food for 100 people or by sponsoring a night for $600. If it is out of your budget to sponsor an entire iftaar, you are more than welcome to co-sponsor an iftaar. No donation is too small.

Nueces Mosque is also sponsoring Iftaar Halaqas every Friday on the UT campus in conjunction with the Muslims Students Association. This is an extraordinary form of da'wah to the 51,000 plus students that attend UT. These iftaars attract a lot of people so we ask for donations of $750 for these days.

While Nueces Mosque will accept and be in gratitude for any amount of donation, the real reward in donating for the sake of Allah swt lies with Him and is immeasurable.

Brothers Barbecue this weekend!

Brothers, please come out and join your fellow Muslim brothers for our end-of-the-semester social event. Nueces Mosque will be hosting a barbeque -- halal hot dogs, burgers, chicken, etc.-- this Saturday, April 25th between Maghrib and 'Isha. Come pray in the house of Allah, hang out with your friends, and eat free food before everyone starts burying themselves in their textbooks!

Upcoming sisters picnic!

Sisters, you also have the opportunity to come out and enjoy the company of your fellow Muslim sisters for the upcoming social event! The Muslim Students Association will be organizing an outdoors day for sisters; the plan is to meet up at the masjid at 9:30am, carpool to Lady Bird Lake for kayaking, and then conclude with a potluck picnic at Zilker Park. Please remember to bring cash so that everyone can pay for the kayaking easily. The rental rates per hour are:

Single kayak: $10
Double kayak: $15
Triple kayak: $20

Also, please do note that the lunch will be a potluck, so make sure to bring something (brownies, cookies, chips, etc.).
